The exhibition Das Buch im Bild (The Book in the Picture) brings together works by 23 national and international artists in which books play a central role. What they have in common is that they deal with the visually plain subject of the book in a surprising, intelligent and aesthetic way in order to place it in very different contexts, no matter how diverse the themes and approaches of the individual works are. Most of the works on display are photographs, because in this medium the question of how an image relates to its subject is the most urgent. This exhibition asks what is left and what function a book takes on in the image when the image reveals so little about it. A book cannot be read on its surface; it remains secretive in the picture. And at the same time, it becomes a sign or symbol, its hidden content pointing to something that is outside the image, in the realm of the imagination.
