The exhibition displays an excerpt from my current project About an Undisciplinable Tree.
The focus of the exhibition lies on the sculptural aspects of the dwarf beech, the question of authorship, and whether and when planting a tree counts as art.
The project focuses on the rare dwarf beech (Fagus sylvatica tortuosa), which is completely useless for any industrial use because of its weird, twisted growth form. For that reason, its forests were destroyed in Germany in the 19th century through large-scale clearing. Today, the only remaining large populations can be found around Torna Hällestad (Sweden) and Verzy (France).
As part of the project, a young dwarf beech was planted at Volkspark Wilmersdorf in Berlin.
